The power of the internet is undeniable. It helps connect us with each other for fun, or to solve conflicts. It propels people to new experiences and opens up untapped opportunities. But the internet also has its dark side, its pitfalls, its dangers—especially when it comes to young children and family members. The advent of the internet has changed the way we do our banking, communicate, vacation, work, watch movies, get news—and even shop. However, that same power is being used for illegal activities including human trafficking. Sadly, human trafficking has become one of the fastest-growing criminal industries in the world: an estimated 2.5 million people are trafficked annually and most of them are women and girls. The good news is that we can all do something about it: we can learn to recognize signs of exploitation and how to help victims escape their traffickers. The journey begins with awareness—knowing what to look for and how to respond when you see it. The first step is to recognize the signs. Here are a few examples: If you see a child alone and crying, take time to approach them. If they are an adult, ask them what happened and where they are going. Once you have gathered this information, call the police. Remember, never enter your car with kids alone, no matter how trustworthy you think they look or how easy it is to find a babysitter for them. If you are approached by someone on the internet who is asking you to do things that have to have bad intentions, report it to the proper authorities. If they are trying to get personal information from you or get you to send them money, they are looking for you to fall into a trap. Remember, both boys and girls alike are being lured into illegal activities through the internet. Another thing that is causing more concerns about the safety of children is the use of social networking sites by kids through which they create profiles describing their hobbies, interests etc. It is advised that kids should not provide any personal information like their real name, address, place of study etc. to strangers. If you are using the internet to research colleges or apply to college, please be careful about sharing your academic credentials with anyone without first checking them out. Scammers are known to pose as representatives from colleges or universities because they know people are anxious to get into college. They use this anxiety to gain access to private information like financial aid details, grade point average (GPA), transcripts and enrollment status. These credentials can then be used for identity theft or other fraud schemes.
